FURS is concerned to promote urban and regional research and within this broad field it is particularly keen to encourage an understanding of the interconnection between social, economic and political processes and of the broader causes and effects of these processes. This means for example that research which examines policies critically and focuses on their unintended as well as intended consequences is more likely to be supported than research on managerially defined questions. Conversely research which takes a ‘technical’ approach to urban and regional questions and does not place them within wider contexts of understanding is unlikely to be given priority. In the current academic year more than 200 students from over 20 different countries have been awarded a Northumbria University international scholarship. We are delighted to announce details of the range of scholarships available in the 2006/7 and 2007/08 academic years.

We also have a number of special scholarships available for specific groups of students. The university is particularly grateful for the generous support of University Governor Hung Ng, who established the Hung Ng scholarship fund for academically excellent students from PR China/Hong Kong SAR, and Michael Sehgal, MBE, whose fund supports scholarships awarded to students at Lyallpur Khalsa College in Punjab, India joining Northumbria Masters programmes.

Most courses at Northumbria University have an intake in September, but a number of scholarships are also available for programmes with an intake in January or later in the year.

We have widened the number of priority countries, see list below. Although priority for the award of scholarships will be given to students from the countries listed, all self-funded international students with overseas fee status from any non-EU country will be considered.

Eligibility and Selection

You will be eligible for consideration if you have overseas (non-EU) fees status and are applying to start a full-time Degree, Diploma or Foundation programme in 2006/7. Students for research programmes and taught programmes (undergraduate and postgraduate) will be considered. Selection is based primarily on outstanding academic achievement. Other factors may be taken into account, such as your level of English proficiency and any professional or non-academic achievements. Financial need cannot be taken into consideration.

Which courses?

Each of our academic Schools (see below) is offering a number of scholarships.
Applicants for all levels of full-time study at Northumbria’s campuses in Newcastle will be considered, including:

• Undergraduate (e.g. first degree).
• Postgraduate (e.g. Masters)
• Research Degree (e.g. PhD, MPhil)
• Undergraduate Foundation and Pre Masters Qualifying.

Scholarship Amount

In most cases the amount of scholarship given will be in the range GBP £ 500-1,000. If you are awarded a scholarship, your tuition fees in your first academic year of study will be reduced by the relevant amount. All of the schools listed below are offering scholarships in all subject areas:

Details:

The Association of MBAs (AMBA) administers a Business School Loan Scheme to assist UK students studying for an MBA.

MBA Loanscan cover tuition fees and living expenses
you can borrow up to two thirds of your pre-course gross annual salary plus tuition fees for each year of full-time study
loans to part-time and distance learning students can cover tuition fees and study equipment
distance learners can borrow up to a maximum of £10,000.
for full-time and part-time students there is nothing to pay until three months after graduation.

Eligibility

To be eligible for an MBA loan you must:

have a place on an AMBA-accredited MBA programme
be a graduate with at least two years' relevant work experience at a level of responsibility appropriate for study at master's level in Business Administration
have at least five years' relevant experience, if not a graduate
be a permanent UK resident (ie have been resident here for a minimum of three years immediately prior to the commencement of study).

Florence Hilda Yates Studentship

Terms of the studentship (2007 entry)
The Florence Hilda Yates Studentship is offered, through competitive application, to one student accepting a full-time place on a PhD or a taught Masters programme within Music and who will begin their studies in September 2007.

The studentship is offered for one year and includes tuition fees (paid at the UK/EU rate) and a living allowance matching AHRC levels (c.£7,500). An additional fund of £1,000 is available to support the student’s work. Applications are open to candidates of any nationality, although applicants who are required to pay international fees will have to find additional sources of funding for their tuition fees.

Applicants who wish to be considered should make clear their interest when they apply. Anyone who has already applied will be automatically considered. Deadline for applications: 1 August 2007.

The Shell Centenary Scholarship Fund

The Shell Centenary Scholarship Fund (TSCSF) was established as a registered charity in 1997.
Under various Masters programmes, TSCSF offers postgraduate students from developing countries the opportunity to study in the United Kingdom and the Netherlands, and gain skills that will make a long-term contribution to the further development of their countries.

Each year nearly 90 students will be given major scholarships (for one year in the UK, and for two years in NL).

Partners in the scheme are the University of Cambridge, Durham University, The University of Edinburgh, Imperial College London, University of Leeds, The University of Oxford and University College London in the UK, and with Delft University of Technology, Eindhoven University of Technology and University of Twente in the Netherlands. These universities also contribute to the funding of scholarships.

The scholarships are known as Shell Centenary Scholarships (in the UK), Royal Dutch Shell Centenary Scholarships (in the NL).

A number of scholarships are also jointly funded with the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office, and are known as Shell Centenary Chevening Scholarships.

The British Chevening Scholarships

The British Chevening ScholarshipsFunded by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and administered by the Brtish Council, these prestigious awards enable overseas students to undertake postgraduate study in the United Kingdom.

How to apply

If you want to apply for a scholarship, you will have to contact the British Embassy/High Commission or The British Council in the country of which you are a citizen. Please see the full country listing and select the country for which you are a citizen for the application procedure.

What are the selection criteria for application?

Candidates for these scholarships must normally meet the following criteria:

A graduate with proven academic skills.
Committed to return to their country and contribute to the socio-economic development of their country through *implementing the new skills and knowledge acquired in the UK.
Established in a career, with a track record of excellence and achievement, and the prospect of becoming a leader in his/her chosen field. The vast majority of Chevening scholars are aged 25 - 35 years old.
Be able to show at interview that they possess the personal qualities to benefit from their scholarship and use it to succeed in their chosen career.
Have a clear idea how their scholarship will benefit their country on their return.
Have good English Language skills, as most UK Higher Education Institutions require a minimum IELTS of 6.5 for admission onto Postgraduate courses.

What are the financial arrangements?

There are three types of scholarship:

Type A scholarships – these cover tuition fees only.
Type B scholarships – these are full scholarships that cover tuition fees, monthly stipend and various one-off allowances.
Type C scholarships – these vary from award to award and cover part/full stipend and/or allowances.

Bea Siswa Inggris untuk Mahasiwa Aceh

British Universities Scholarship Scheme for Higher Education Institutions in Aceh, Indonesia in 2005-2009

University of Birmingham is delighted to be a part of this consortium of twelve universities in Great Britain (Birmingham, Bristol, Cambridge, Cardiff, Leeds, Liverpool, Manchester, Newcastle, Nottingham, Sheffield, Southampton and York). This consortium of UK Universities has established the British Universities’ Scholarship Scheme for Higher Education Institutions in Aceh, Indonesia. Each participating institution is offering one full Masters scholarship per year for the next four academic years (2005/06 to 2008/09).

The scholarship has two components : fee waiver and a living cost allowance. The scholarships are offered to Institut Agama Islam Negeri Ar-Raniry (IAIN), Banda Aceh, and to Universitas Syiah Kuala (UNSYIAH), Banda Aceh, with the specific objective of helping these two higher education institutions to strengthen the competence of their academic staff following the tsunami of 26th December 2005.

IAIN and UNSYIAH are invited to nominate candidates for the scholarships. University of Birmingham will then select candidates on the basis of their normal admission criteria. The British Council in Indonesia is generously supporting the Scheme by providing free English language tuition for candidates to bring them up to the IELTS standards required by the UK institutions. Furthermore, the British Embassy in Indonesia has confirmed that the visa fee for scholars from IAIN and UNSYIAH travelling to the UK through this Scheme will be waived.

The coordinating institution in the UK for this scheme is the University of Leeds. For further information about this scheme and on application process, please refer to contact details below.
Procedures
1) Initial applications are made by individuals in the two Aceh institutions. Each application is approved and endorsed by the Rector of the applicant’s own institution or the Dean of his or her own Faculty.
2) Applications are forwarded to University of Leeds by the applicant’s institution, preferably by email attachment or by fax. Preliminary allocations are made and the initial application forms are passed to University of Birmingham.
